2000

Following success of Training sessions in 1999 (see below), John Best and Hugh Myers have agreed to run two training sessions if there is the necessary interest from the members.

One will be at Lee-on-Solent, the other will possibly be at Grafham Water but if there are other easy venues suggested, they will be considered.

1999

In 1999 we surprised ourselves with two very well supported training sessions, when little was planned in advance.

The cancellation of the Bosham Open Meeting brought everyone to Lee-on-Solent and Club Racing was followed by some training under the watchful eye of John Best.

The weekend saw the first appearance of Tom Clancy's new Mader boat, and embarrassingly fast it was too! Brett and Ben Dingwall also arrived with Tom's old boat. Hopefully we shall be seeing more of these good sailors. We shall all have to watch out as they get used to the boat!

James Cole and Gordon Kingston both hopped onto Tom's and other boats to help the helmsmen get things sorted, and Hugh Myers and John Best gave their best advice on a variety of subjects. Sailing Tony Lyall's new Mader made Hugh realise how unusual his own Speedwave boat really is!

An even better training opportunity arose the weekend before the Worlds when Cathy Foster offered to give us all a helping hand. First hand experience of professional coaching from the world of Olympic sailing was not to be missed! Do not forget that Cathy has done plenty of FD sailing herself including winning the Nationals in 1994.

The popularity of the day, and the light winds, made life even more difficult for Cathy, but she kept us all going for the whole day.

Starting was always going to be an interesting subject, with 80 boats on the line the prospect for the Worlds. Theory on the shore was followed by practice on the water, despite the light wind and strong tides.

Practical work on tacking and gybing was also a popular exercise, if a bit exhausting as we were starting to get the hot weather booked for the Worlds!

Whilst I am sure that our boat handling improved, Bas and Marc van der Pol from Holland showed us all up a bit!
