FD UK 1998 Midland Area ChampionshipRutland Sailing Club - 3/4 October 1998This year 1980 Silver Medallist David Wilkins and his crew Simon Stonehouse were beaten in this event for the first time since 1991! After Saturday’s racing they were looking as strong as ever, winning the first race from Hugh Myers and Gordon Kingston, and finishing second in Race 2 behind John Best and James Cole. Steve Parry and Dave Parr had two good third places. John Berry made a welcome return with a keen young crew, Will Rand, and Keith Martin and John Lansley found some good speed in 363 (ex Jon Turner and Charles Apthorp). The British Section Annual General Meeting was held after racing on Saturday, followed by a very pleasant dinner in Rutland Sailing Club. There was a little more wind on Sunday and Hugh Myers and Gordon Kingston passed both Best and Wilkins on the reaches to win Race 3. This meant that these three boats would fight things out in the last race and the winners would take the trophy. Once again, these three made up the leading group, just ahead of Parry, Berry and Tony Lyall and Colin Burns, who were having a better day. Myers and Kingston used their reaching speed again to take the lead from Wilkins and Stonehouse, but Best and Cole were always in contention and crossed in the lead at one stage. Myers and Kingston held on to win a second race and to take the trophy away, however, despite Wilkins and Best heading for opposite sides of the lake on the final leg. No doubt we shall see more of David Wilkins next year, with the Worlds at Lee-on-Solent and also he will want "his trophy" back!
