More photos at www.fotoboat.com New faces, challenging conditions, close racing, old wooden boat triumphs! Mumbles, a new venue for the FDs lived up to the reputation for excellently run and friendly competition in challenging conditions. On the first evening the Commodore and his wife hosted a very successful open evening and the barbeque on the second evening was welcomed after an intense day of three races in testing conditions. The first day saw seven foot waves and variable winds from 15 to 23 knots. With so many newcomers to the Class it was decided to play safe and wait for the conditions to improve on day two. The event was shared with the 505 Nationals and the carnage they suffered in the stormy conditions provided testimony to a wise decision. Competition amongst the first five FDs was intense with many place changes during each of the seven races and the event as a whole with nobody dominating the racing. Strang and Alex Rogers sailed very consistently in Alex’s recently acquired FD. They were all set to win the Championship when suddenly Keith Martin & John Lansley, the class veterans, appeared from the other side of the course in front of them on the final beat of the last race. This separated them from Julian Bridges and Corin Westley and resulted in tying on points and losing out on the count back. Julian, sailing the oldest boat and only all wood boat in the fleet, had been overnight leader on the first day of racing. The second day went badly for him and Corin. Strang & Alex had established a good lead by the end of day two so only two firsts in the final races could conceivably redeem the situation. Julian lead both races on the final day with determination from the favoured pin end. With years of sailing in Mumbles Bay in his youth, he mastered the NW wind and Mumbles current and stretched out a convincing lead. Oscar Chess, sailing from his home club in Mumbles and crewed by David Charles in a borrowed boat showed great form on the first day with two thirds and a first putting him second overall on day one. Although, day three was less successful, the day two results kept him third overall. Tony Lyall & Colin Burns and Peter Doran & Richard Phillips, kept the pressure on the top three gaining several seconds and thirds. They finished on equal points taking fourth and fifth overall. Racing was equally intense throughout the fleet with many place changes and some very close racing. Lucy Lingard, sailing with Jamie Whitaker in a borrowed boat was disappointed, due to crew illness, not to complete the races on day one when the stronger conditions suited her. Also suffering from an injured crew, Rosie Pye, retired from the races on day one. Vicky Parry crewed by Ben Stirrup was leading the challenge for the trophy for the first woman. Competition intensified on day two with the Pyes finding very good boat speed in the lighter conditions. Bill Oliver sailing in his first FD nationals in a twenty two year old boat found great boat speed and gave the more regular FD sailors very good competition. On the Saturday evening, the FD fleet had a great evening out at a local bistro. At the prize giving on Sunday afternoon, there was warm applause from both the 505 and FD fleets for all the hard and successful work by the club members in hosting the very successful joint National championships.
