FD UK Whitstable Open Meeting 1999

Whitstable Yacht Club

29 - 31 May 1999

The Bank Holiday hospitality at Whitstable is always good and 7 races were scheduled over the 3 days.

The closest racing, all through the fleet, was on Saturday. John Best/James Cole and Hugh Myers/Gordon Kingston won a race each but had to fight off Peter Doran/Richard Phillips and Andy Moss/Steve Rockey throughout the day. There was so much place changing going on!

After a splendid evening in the Club, with Champagne and local Oysters, it was a bit of a shock on Sunday morning to be greeted by 30-knot winds - no racing that day! Somehow everyone felt the need to get together in a little restaurant in Canterbury, so the day was not wasted after all!

The lighter winds on Monday morning saw Hugh and Gordon take two race wins. Andy and Steve scored 2nd and 3rd, and Tim Lester/Roy Poole started to get closer to the lead with the first of their two 2nds that day. John and James had a relatively bad morning with two fourths.

Hugh and Gordon had already won the event, but had a hard struggle against Tim and Roy in the last race. Neither troubled Peter and Richard though, who sailed away to a clear win.

Hugh and Gordon were allowed to touch the delicate "full model" trophy once again, and to have their photos taken with it. However, it stays in the WYC for someone else next year - maybe!
