The FD worlds in Denmark attracted 69 entries from 14 nations. Jorgen &
Jacob Boysen Moller (DEN) won. British places Peter Doran & Richard Phillips (39), ,
Tony Lyall & Colin Burns (51), Julian & Cathy Bridges, (53). Tom Clancy (IRL)

Sailboat 2001
The fastest FD in UK, third in FD worlds 2000 and 6th in
Worlds 1999 was on display at Sailboat 2001 rigged with the experimental carbon mast. This
significantly improves upwind performance in waves and makes the FD much easier to right
after a capsize due to significant reduction in weight of mast.

FD rule changes
Changes in rules are effective from 1 March 2001 and can be found at www.sailing.org/rating/FD.pdf.
Changes relate to battens, Side deck pads and references to IYRU rules being replaced by
various ISAF rules.
JB 3rd at FD Worlds
The FD worlds in South Africa were attended by 21 FDs. After
the first race, very high winds (25+knots) and steep seas led to several days racing
being postponed . 2 races were held per day. On the final day winds were again too high
for racing. Ian McCrossin & James Cook (AUS) won their third World Championship
title with 6points. John Best and James Cole won the third race and finished 3rd overall
with 11 points behind Hans-Peter Schwarz and Roland Kirst (GER) 7 points.

about analysing disasters Contents
Midland
Area Championship and AGM
David & Gill Wilkins organised another
excellent event at Rutland which was held in conjunction with the Contender and Osprey
Classes. David regained the trophy. The event was again the best attended FD event.
At the AGM on the Saturday evening it was agreed that the experiment with carbon masts
should continue and it was noted that John Best and others who had sailed against him are
convinced that the mast is faster particularly in waves and that the boat can be righted
after a capsize very much more easily and quickly.

ISAF retains 6 dinghies in the 2004
Olympics
At the November ISAF conference in Edinburgh, ISAF reversed its earlier decision
to reduce the number of dinghy events from 6 to 5, changed the proposed Women's match race
event to Women's fleet event and voted the Soling out in a 20-17 vote in favour of the
Star after the Events Committee made it clear that the 49er was the least supported of the
Olympic Classes. The Tornado Sport was introduced in place of the Tornado and the Yngling
is the Women's Fleet race class. The Laser. 470, Finn, Europe and 49er
were retained. Contents
