INTERNATIONAL FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS OXFORD SAILING CLUB OXFORD TANKARDS SATURDAY/SUNDAY April 28/29 April 2007 Good winds - sunshine – superb close racing – excellent social The gusty and unstable north easterly force 4-5 on Saturday and force 2-3 on Sunday provided much excitement, very close racing and many place changes. Tony Lyall & Colin Burns lead the first race at the windward mark in their new boat. By the gybe mark they had pulled out a good lead. However on the next beat, Julian Bridges & Peter Hadfield and Peter Doran & Richard Phillips pulled through by finding a favourable shift. After an intense battle, Doran/Phillips beat Bridges/Hadfield by two metres. The new team of Mike Murley and Jim Harrop showed good speed. Andrew Turner & John Galyer had not lost their skills after many years away from FD racing finishing fourth behind Lyall/Burns. In race two Doran and Bridges again battled for the lead with Bridges winning. Neil Pye sailing with Jamie Whitaker were well on the pace and finished third. On Saturday evening there was an excellent social event at a pub in North Marston. Sunday saw with lighter winds from the same direction. The FDs started with the fast handicap club racing around the cans. Racing was again very close and boat handling was at a premium on the intricate course set to benefit several classes. Julian Bridges established a lead with close racing between Peter Doran and Andrew Turner not far behind In race four, Doran needed to win and indeed lead several times during the race but on the penultimate lap Bridges got ahead and stayed in front. Andrew Turner was second. Keith Martin and John Lansley who had showed bursts of good speed challenged Tony Lyall for fourth place. Results
