FD Training - 10 May
Lee on the Solent

Training will be provided by Toby Dale and James Cole.
Start Time 11.00

Aims
Provide a guide to creating a simple easy to achieve set of rig numbers.
Look at basic rig set up and offer guidance for possible improvements.
Aim to improve communication inside the boat
Create awareness of what is happening on the race track around you.
Point out areas of boat handling that are causing problems and help provide solutions.
Provide the tools to deal with what is thrown at you on the race course

To do this we aim to split the fleet on the first half of Saturday, the first half will remain ashore and cover set up and tuning for each boat with James. Moving to each boat discussing the set up of each and hopefully providing a better understanding of what makes the rig work. Calibration will be  an essential part of this.

The second half of the fleet will be on the water going through basic maneuvers (tacks, gybes and mark rounding's). Emphasis will be placed on smoothness rather than speed.

For the second half of the day the aim is to create awareness of what is going on around you. Exercises may include:
Windward sprints
Leeward sprints
Windward/ leeward races
The GUT BUSTER!! (You have been warned!)

Attendees may join in the Club racing on the Sunday and if enough interest
there may be separate race(s) for FDs

Tom Clancy

It is with great sadness that the British FD Class reports the death of Tom Clancy following a heart attack whilst visiting the USA. Tom was a very loyal supporter of the FD Class. He kept his FD at Grafham Water and participated in numerous FD events in the UK and was always friendly and his sense of humour provided great entertainment at each event.

-------------------

Tribute from David Wilkins
Tom and I first met in 1978 when Tom was looking to get an FD with the idea of doing an Olympic campaign.
He soon realized what it took and he decided his best efforts would be to help us with ours. He took on the role of fundraising for our campaign as there was very little money available from Ireland. He raised the money that bought the new boat – IR5 that we went on to win a silver medal in. He also supported us through 1980 by acting as our support at most major events.

He was with us in Tallinn for the Olympics – which he always said was one of the high spots for him. That was a bit of a battle with the ISA – but he had given us huge support and deserved to be there more than anyone in Ireland.

He eventually inherited that boat, Glenfarne (named after his beloved home town in Ireland) from us in 1984.  He continued to support the class from 1980 (when he sailed IR4) until very recently when his poor health restricted his sailing. I know he loved sailing the FD more than any other boat and enjoyed the company of all the British FD fleet.

--------------------------------

His dry sense of humour will be missed by all who knew him.

We all send our condolences and best wishes to Teresa and his three daughters.

New Results Service
The FD GBR Class is working with Simon Lovesey (Sailracer) to load past FD Championship results into Sailracer (see www.sailracer.co.uk) . This provides an archive of past results which can be searched and can be used to chart comparative results between two sailors that have raced against each other.
For information about the FD aspects of this project please contact Richard Phillips.
