IFDCO General Committee (World Council) held its annual meeting today at Lee-on-the-Solent. The travel grants to teams with combined ages under 55 had been welcomed by sailors and IFDCO confirmed that there would be similar travel grants for the next Worlds. It was also agreed that the coveted Rose Bowl would be awarded to the best young team at future World Championships.

IFDCO decided that the European Championship will be at Elba - Italy 3 -10 June 1999 and that discusssions should proceed with a view to holding the 2000 World Championship with or immediately before/after the 505 Class World Championship in Durban in November 2000 or at Elba 3-10 June 1999. A decision will be announced soon.

IFDCO will be seeking approval at the  ISAF conference in November to permit carbon booms and/or spinnaker poles and electronic compasses. There are at this time no plans to permit carbon masts. IFDCO does however approve the testing of a carbon mast by a British FD with a view to considering the feedback at the next Annual Meeting which will be on Sunday 11 June 2000 in Elba

Ian McCrossin (AUS) was re-appointed as President until June 2000.

Saturday 31 July

Races 6 was sailed today after the start had been postponed to allow the seabreeze to settle. The race started in a force 2 SE breeze against a strong tide. The fleet headed for the shore and put in a series of close tacks along the shoreline providing a stunning spectacle to the crowds on the beach. Chaos ensued at the first mark as the port tack boats from the shore met the starboard tack boats coming into the mark many of which misjudged the strength of the tide. A numbr of boats attempted several roundings of the mark. As the wind died the Race Officer shortened the course on the third beat with Majthenyi/Domokos in the lead.

Races 4 and 5 were sailed today. Race 4 was sailed in very strong and gusty NE winds force 3-6, with frequent large shifts and many holes in the wind. Schonherr/Berlin won again. By the start of the second race the wind had dropped and continued to drop during the race allowing many of the competitors to power up their rigs in the occaisional non trapeze strength winds. Many boats found the large and frequent shifts in the wind very demanding. . The committee boat recorded up to 110* wind shifts during the day. Competitoirs are looking forward to a rest  from the very challenging conditions and hope that by Friday the wind will be somewhat steadier in direction! The brilliant sunshine continued well into the evening.

Races 2 & 3 were sailed today in very strong and gusty NE winds force 2-6. Race 2 started in an adverse tide which kept competitors behind the line. Schonherr & Boysen Moller won race 2. A number of competitors decided to skip the second race today after the gruelling first race which saw a broken mast. The windward mark was the scene of several incidents as the tide pushed a few boats onto the mark. One competitor was unable to free the rudder trapped by the anchor warp for the mark and eventually cut the mark adrift!!

Race 3 was started in a force 5 and the rest of the race was as gusty as the earlier race today. Borowski/Berlin set the pace and won.
