The dates given in most cases are the dates of registration and are not necessarily the construction dates.

Some unassigned numbers were subsequently issued to owners importing boats during the 1970's, particularly following Worlds, and Olympic regattas. These numbers are indicated separately from the purely chronological assignments.

Many boats escaped official registration or measurement or both, due to lapse of vendor or purchaser to file paperwork with Association. These boats are included in "Misc." Among these are of course examples of most of the represented builders, as well as numerous One-of-a-kinds. Therefor totals are of those boats known to the Association.

This is not the official IFDCAUS database, but rather an historical study by the editor. Reasonably reliable new information about the identity of "misc." boats will be incorporated into the tallies as it becomes availible.

Many numbers of boats destroyed, of "misc." boats never measured, or which were never assigned have been subsequently acquired as "personal" sail numbers. Most of the boats in competition currently sail under a personal sail number rather than the assigned sail number of the boat. Many FD owners do not know the original number of their boat and have no paperwork.

In the case of overseas builders, years spanned are those of US registrations only. The history of the builders is beyond the scope of this study.

This list is current to 2002. It includes 1386 boats registered in the US and 104 unassigned numbers.
