| How They Were Chosen A year ago last February the TRAPEZE published the FD/US "Procedure for Selecting the United States FD Olympic Team. " This was a rather radical departure from all previous practice and was viewed with reserve, if not alarm. There were two new features. First, we established a series of regional and national observation regattas to determine which of the regular FD sailors were qualified for invi-tation to the Final Trials. Secondly, we invited participation in the Final Trials of outstanding representatives from non-Olympic classes. Both phases succeeded even beyond our expectations. Where we planned to select only 18, FD/US members we found that in over 150 races in 30 Regional and National Observation regattas there were 24 FD teams who were felt to have a real chance and deserved an opportunity to compete. As a result of our invitations to the non-Olympic classes we have entries from l0 classes, plus the Mallory Cup and Single-Hand Champions. FD/US has worked hard to bring the very best US skippers into the very best competition so that we can send the very best team to Sagami Bay this fall. We want a Gold Medal. Top sailors not mentioned on the preceeding page may still receive an invitation to the Final Trials by placing high in the Tulip Bowl Regatta July 4-5 or being named by a non-Olympic Class. Representing the US Olympic Yachting Committee and heading the Protest Committee, will be Mr. Paul Smart. The winner of the Final Trials may be expected to be named to represent the United States in the 1960, Olympics, and will receive full financial support from the U. S. I. S. A, ...Jack Powell, Chairman, FD/US Olympic Committee. |
