THE 1968 NORTH AMERICANS IN PICTURES

The start, 1968 North Americans at San Diego, Calif. A record 64 boats entered the regatta. Everyone right at the line.

The traffic was still heavy at the windward mark over 1-1/2 miles out to sea...

... and still pretty bad at the end of the run. Barbers (1228), Dennis surtees (1226), Frank Kloss (855), Russell Painton (857).

Man and wife team Jim and Sherry Parsons (824) take a leeward start.

They came from Guadalajara...

...six entries all the way from Canada...

...and some natives who sailed in from points west..?

It was trapeze weather everyday - winds steady 8-14mph - ideal conditions for sailing.

Measurement was the most complete ever - all had to sand off the middle section of the centerboard. It could easily be determined who had measured in by looking at their board.

Most of the boats were weighed.  Our statistician reports that for 36 boats weighed the average was 378 lbs. One boat weighed 351 lbs all up!

The navy provided swift boats and radar to set the marks up at an accuracy to 3-1/2 inches...also spectators' boats that were jam packed every day.
