EDITOR WINS TULIP BOWL REGATTA
by Dick Wilson

Art and Sue Lange found the light going to their liking May 24-25 and carried off the Tulip Bowl with 1,2,1 placings in the first major Region II FD Invitational of the year. This husband/wife team won over an aggressive 20- boat fleet that included several teams from neighboring Region I.

Other top crews included Californian Scott Allan, now Sailing Coach at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, and crew Bill Bergantz, who put together 4,1,2 placings for series runner-up spot. Third place went to the Farley/Kenyon combination. Like Lange, Farley came to the FD from Jet-l4's. He recorded 3,3,3 finishes in this regatta, in his new Mader wood double-bottom. Yet another former Jet-14 skipper, Bill Watson, with his brother Jack as crew, was usually well up among the leaders, but faded to fourth overall adding a 12th to his earlier 2,4 finishes in the final heat. Another husband/wife duo, Herb and Jackie Ingham from Northport, L.I. were fifth after 5,7,4 placings. The best local team was Regatta Chairman John Hamor and Bob Homan, who were eighth.

As the top three or four boats often finished within a few boat lengths of each other, sailing tactics -- not boat speed -- accounted for the order of finish. Places changed often during the beats, however, and frequent windshifts near the weather mark were a factor.

The triangular courses always provided both beam and close reaches which would have been far more exciting had the wind cooperated with Race Committee Chairman Sandy Huntsman. As it was, the wind never exceeded force 2-3.

First and second place boats were Plastrends, Lange favoring Kenyon sails and Allan a North main and Elms genoa. The Watsons tried a new Bruce Banks genoa which featured a noticeable shelf along the foot and seemed to be particularly effective when reaching. Denis Farley and a few others sported vertically adjusting rudderblades.

No account of this year's Tulip Bowl Regatta would be complete without mention of the lively party at the Devlin's spacious new home complete with pool; the refreshments alone made up for the light winds and occasional drizzle.

FLEET 6 NEWS
by Herb and Jackie Ingham

Fleet 6, sailing in the TriClub YRA area of Northport and Huntington Bays on the North Shore of Long Island, is gaining some momentum this year. We have a core of four active boats --Jim Neviackas is campaigning again after a couple of summers off; the Kaiser team, Eric and Ridge, are in the Plastrend their older brother Ted used to sail; Herb and Jackie Ingham still have their old dependable Dubdam; and newcomer Phil Delano has tremendous enthusiasm for FD's and is doing really well. With a few other occasionals in the area, including visits from The Great South Bay by the boat of Ben and Eric Hall and by Marty Fleisher, we are in good shape.

So far winds have been good. The only day of cancellation for no air was balanced by another cancellation for too much (we had 50-knot gusts before the race was called --good practice for that Saturday at the Cannonball!)

Our TriClub series over Independence Day weekend had seven FD's, moderate winds and complicated scoring. The Hall boat missed the first race but, skippered by Thistle sailor Craig Ryder with Eric crewing, won the other two. The Inghams had first and second places in the first two races but fouled out of the last in an over-eager duel with Ryder at the last mark. This gave the series to the consistent sailing of visitor (from Kingston, N.Y.) Doug Hart with his dad Dave crewing. All this doesn't tell how close the racing was; the Kaisers and Neviackas also had good leads at least once in the series.

Barring depletion for out-of-town regattas, we think we can provide a good day for anyone who wants to join us for a visit!
