1960- Built first Finn in Nelson No. 36. He
sailed in Auckland for Rome Olympic trials in the Finn, which was the
first time he saw a Flying Dutchman. He described it as "the most beautiful
hull shape that I had ever seen, fine entry, low wooded and narrow bum"
1963-69-
John Betts and Milton bought the first FD in Nelson KZ37 named ‘El Scorpio’.
In 1968 the Mexico Olympic trials, he trained every day for a year in
both Finn and FD. Sailed in the trails in FD with Graham Watt
1969-74- KZ62 named ‘Fantasy’ various nationals
and 1972 Munich Olympic trials and then sold it to buy KZ72 named ‘Ruth
Ellen’.
1974-75- As Ruth-Ellen was not finished he brought
KZ22 ‘Pandora’ for the nationals in Timaru.
1975-80- After nationals travelled to Auckland
, and at 9pm one night knocked on Jimmy McKays and asked if KZ72 ‘Ruth
Ellen’ was finished, it was not so he stayed with him and worked for
a week on it to finish it.
1980-84- Brought KZ96 ‘Vision’. In 1981 travelled
to Mauldi Alec sailed an Australian charter boat and came 3rd in Victorian
State Champs. In 1982 he took to Geelong Worlds
1984-2001- Brought NZL 100 ‘Metro Express’.
Won his first FD national championship in 1985. Won again in 1989.which
qualified him to sail in Italy at the last closed world champions, on
return to home set about organized the 1991 Worlds in Tauranga.
Milton's last sail was on lake Ngaroto at the
Masters Games in 2000. In 2001 he reluctantly sold "Metro' " to Greg
Buchannan.
