FD
USA website
The new FD USA website is now at www.sailfd.org/USA
and is being maintained by Jonathan Clapp.
Do you have any historic or exciting photos of FDs or FD sailors?
The FD Photo gallery is now open
and awaits your contributions. The best photos received in each of the following
categories will feature in the gallery:- Champions, Exciting, Scenic sailing venues,
Regattas, Social, Equipment.
Are you a sailmaker or an expert on FD sails?
We are looking for somebody to update the Class Manual section on sails to reflect developments and changes in
sails since 1993 when the new larger spinnaker was introduced.
Worlds 2001
The FD Worlds are scheduled to be held in Denmark at the end of June.
A large fleet is expected following on from the excellent attendance at the FD Europeans
at Elba, Italy in 2000.
Carbon Masts
The experiment with carbon masts continues. Thus far the main
benefits of a carbon mast are improved performance in wind and waves, the reduction in
risk of the boat inverting when capsized and the incresaed ease with which a capsized boat
can be righted, For more ideas click here.
Olympics 2000
Congratulations to Paul Foerster (two times FD world Champion (1991
& 1992)) who added another silver medal at Olympics 2000 in the 470 to his 1992 FD
medal.
Olympics 2004
At the eleventh hour, ISAF realised its mistake in trying to reduce
the number of dinghy events in 2004. Faced with the prospect of having to drop the 49er,
it decided to eliminate the Soling and include a women's fleet racing event in the Yngling
rather than the proposed match racing. Whilst fully supporting the decision to retain 6
dinghy events in 2004, the FD class extends its sympathy to the Soling sailors who were
the victim of ISAF politics much like FD sailors in 1992.
Worlds 2000
Congratulations to Ian McCrossin and James Cook on gaining another FD
World Championship title in South Africa. |

Sailboat 2001 at
Alexandra Palace, London was well attended by current, former and hopefully future FD
sailors. The experimental carbon rig on John Best's FD attracted attention. There was an
encouraging increase in the level of serious enquiries about owning and sailing FDs. The
FD stand was sponsored by Banks sails.
Australian FD
Nationals (20-25 Jan 2001) were won by Norman Rydge and Doug Rawson Harris who beat World
Champions Ian McCrossin & James Cook. 18 competitors from 2 nations participated.
Many thanks for all the
contributions and comments since www.sailfd.org was launched in January 2001.
All suggestions and comments will be considered.
Priority is being given
to loading contributions (news, articles and photos) to enhance the website and to attract
young internationally minded sailing enthusiasts to sail an FD.
Congratulations to Ellen
MacArthur on her shining example and outstanding achievement in the Vendee Globe
single handed race around the world.
Youngest (at 24) sailor ever to complete race
2nd fastest ever (94 days)
If you have a dream
then you too can make it come true.
Ellen started sailing in a dinghy purchased by saving her
school dinner money and learned to sail on a small lake.

Julius
Blankstein
The Flying Dutchman Class is saddened to
hear of the death of Julie Blankstein on 27th February 2001. We send our sympathy to his
wife Elaine and his family.
Julie was a very good friend to the Flying Dutchman Class and as President during the
Olympic years of the eighties, his leadership was firm, wise and committed. He was also a
knowledgeable and conscientious International Judge and did much good work for the Class
on IYRU Committees.
He cared a great deal for the sailors, typically spending hours in the boat park in Rio,
Brazil, after a World Championship race was abandoned due to the depredations of a
particularly vicious offshore squall, to ensure that everyone had got back safely.
He was unstinting with his time, energy and kindness and many sailors will remember his
presence, accompanied by Elaine, at Championships all
over the world .
Julie will be greatly missed.
