SAILBOAT 2003
The
FD stand at Sailboat 2003 had the highest number of enquiries for many
years with over 50 people registering for more information and/or a test
sail. (23 March 2003)
SYMMETRIC SINGLE TRAPEZE DINGHY
CLASSES UNITE AT SAILBOAT 2003
During
the last 20 years, the UK dinghy scene has seen the rise and fall of a
large number of asymmetric spinnaker classes heavily marketed by various
manufacturers. Each year new dinghies have been released onto an already
crowded market place.
This heavy marketing has gradually eroded the numbers sailing in trapeze
dinghies with symmetric spinnakers: classes like the Fireball, 505,
Osprey, Hornet and Javelin which, like the FD, offer great value for
money and challenging sailing for helm and crew.
At Sailboat 2003, these
classes have joined together with the FD and organised a Symmetric Grand
Prix which will be held at Datchet Water Sailing Club on 4/5 October
2003. See www.fastsail.org for
results
It is hoped that this is but
a first step in combining the resources of those Classes which offer
sailors a choice of builder, sailmaker and spar manufacturer and can
offer international competition and the backing of strong Class
Associations so as to continue to offer sailors the choice between the
"manufacturers circuit" and the more traditional approach.

Carbon Masts
Approx 60% of competitors at Worlds were in favour of
early ending of ban on carbon masts. IFDCO is drafting a proposed change
of rule for consideration by National FD Class Associations with a view
to a decision at 2003 AGCM which will be held at EC 2003.
At the 2003 AGCM it was
decided
1.
IFDCO would submit no rule changes on the use
of Carbon Masts for the ISAF conference in November 2003.
2. We would
extend the Survey date until 31 October 2003.
Consequently earliest date for implementation of carbon masts is 1 March
2005 (21 August 2003)
Results of survey released. IFDCO will
decide in Melbourne (3 December 2003)

A record number of women sailed in the FD worlds in
2002 and the first all women team Elisa Koenig & Julia Weissbach (GER) finished 35th overall.
Tanja Heijink (NED) was the first women helm sailing with Theo Rutten
(29th overall). Tanja with Marianne Lubbers. made FD history in 2001 in
Denmark, being the first all women team to sail in a FD World
Championship.
Membership of IFDCO
It was agreed at the 2002 AGCM that in order to extend the promotion of the
Class and to involve crews more, all sailors who participate in the
Worlds, Continental and National Championships should be members of
IFDCO. At present the helm must be a full member of IFDCO, and in some
cases crews own the boat and are also full members of IFDCO. In future
both the helm and crew of teams entering these events shall be either a
Full or Associate member of IFDCO and at least one must be a Full
member. All FD sailors and supporters of the FD are encouraged to become
Associate members of IFDCO. Membership fees are currently - Full
Members- 32 euros (25 euros if paid early), Associate Member - 16 euros.
