SYMMETRIC SINGLE TRAPEZE DINGHY CLASSES UNITE AT SAILBOAT 2003
During the last 20 years, the UK dinghy scene has seen the rise and fall of a large number of asymmetric spinnaker classes heavily marketed by various manufacturers. Each year new dinghies have been released onto an already crowded market place.

This heavy marketing has gradually eroded the numbers sailing in trapeze dinghies with symmetric spinnakers: classes like the Fireball, 505, Osprey, Hornet and Javelin which, like the FD, offer great value for money and challenging sailing for helm and crew.

At Sailboat 2003, these classes have joined together with the FD and organised a Symmetric Grand Prix which will be held at Datchet Water Sailing Club on 4/5 October 2003. See www.fastsail.org for results

It is hoped that this is but a first step in combining the resources of those Classes which offer sailors a choice of builder, sailmaker and spar manufacturer and can offer international competition and the backing of strong Class Associations so as to continue to offer sailors the choice between the "manufacturers circuit" and the more traditional approach.

Carbon Masts
Approx 60% of competitors at Worlds were in favour of early ending of ban on carbon masts. IFDCO is drafting a proposed change of rule for consideration by National FD Class Associations with a view to a decision at 2003 AGCM which will be held at EC 2003.

At the 2003 AGCM it was decided

1. IFDCO would submit no rule changes on the use of Carbon Masts for the ISAF conference in November 2003.

2. We would extend the Survey date until 31 October 2003.

Consequently earliest date for implementation of carbon masts is 1 March 2005 (21 August 2003)

Results of survey released. IFDCO will decide in Melbourne (3 December 2003)
